Best DIY/Construction Youtube Channels

Construction involves an a array trades, techniques, and materials, and it’s always evolving with new products and new codes coming out every year.

Despite many years of experience, I still regularly learn from other tradesman and love figuring out better ways of doing things. Today, I want to share some of my favorite educational content creators in Construction and DIY. YouTube is an amazing resource for this, as it allows you to look over the shoulder of skilled craftsmen at work. If you’re a nerd like, me, you’ll love these, here are some of my favorites:

Drywall and Texture

Vancouver Carpenter - Fantastic demonstrations of how to hang and finish drywall, so many tips and tricks from a master craftsman, with very watchable content. A wealth of knowledge.

That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement - A little eccentric, but also a fantastic resource, with an expansive knowledge base, especially with regard to matching drywall texture.

Carpentry (Structural/Framing)

AwesomeFramers - Based here in Port Orchard, WA, these guys have great attention to detail, show their mistakes, and show how to frame houses. They do a great job of showin efficient techniques for building, useful demonstrations and explanations of various structural requirements for houses and why they matter, and they make it fun all the while.

Essential Craftsman - a wholesome channel that spreads life lessons as well as carpentry tips, tricks, and more. They have an entire home build documented from site assessment through painting and everything in between, with 166 videos covering the process in detail. Fantastic channel, and Scott is a gem of a human being.

Carpentry (Trim/Finish)

Insider Carpentry - Spencer Lewis - Spencer is a master craftsman, and a fantastic teacher with attention to detail. Great info on installing baseboards, crown, doors, etc; he covers many premium/high end details as well as inexpensive ways to create fantastic looking work. My go-to for finish carpentry continuing education. HouseImprovements and The Funny Carpenter (below) are also great resources for finish carpentry guidance.

Electrical

Electrician U - a passionate and well-spoken electrician who teaches others how to do electrical in incredibly high quality videos. Cannot say enough good things about this channel.

Sparky Channel - another fantastic resource for electrical work.

Flooring

Floors by Southern Boys - a great resource for installing various types of flooring. If you want to do your own LVP or laminate flooring, check these guys out.

So That’s How You Do That - another honorable mention in flooring, great resource if you’re new to installing LVP and such

Handyman/Generalist

HouseImprovements - the production quality of the videos may seem amateur, but Shannon of HouseImprovements is anything but. He is one of the most knowledgeable craftsman on Youtube, and he does a fantastic job of guiding you through various tasks, from installing vinyl siding, to hanging doors, framing walls, etc. It’s rare to have someone offer instruction on such a wide variety of tasks and yet do such a high quality job with each. Don’t skip this one.

Funny Carpenter - The Funny Carpenter has high quality, entertaining, and very practical finish carpentry guides as well as very insightful and helpful DIY tips and tricks. If you’re looking to do your own trim, his channel is a great place to start.

Painting

Paint Life TV - An absolute wealth of knowledge on painting, caulking, and finishing as well as super helpful information on useful tools, tricks, and methods.

Pole Barns / Post-Frame Structures

RR Buildings - They are THE guys in the pole barn industry, and put out an immense amount of high quality content covering topics related to these types of buildings, as well as some really good instruction on working with metal flashing for pristine waterproofing details.

Tool Reviews/Research

Project Farm - Basically Myth Busters style experimental trials on all the tools and such you want to buy. Knives? Check. Cordless vacuums? Covered. Best sawzall blades? Yup. Shear strength of various nails and screws? Of course! All in a no-fluff, fun, and honest presentation. One of my absolute favorite channels and my go-to research before purchasing many tools.
